The popular HIPCT Rent Party is back! Inspired by Harlem, NY rent parties of the 1920s and 30s. Rent parties were an innovative response from families finding a means to keep a roof over their heads during tough economic times! The host family invited friends and neighbors for an evening of soul food, jazz music, poetry reading, and dancing. Guests in turn donated money to help pay the rent. It was a powerful demonstration of community and at the same time an explosion in culture.
Jazz music by “The Alex Collins Trio” featuring Alex Collins, pianist/composer/ orchestrator and recording artist. Demo of period swing dances by members of Princeton University Swing Club.
Southern-soul menu and cocktails included.
Period attire optional. Recognition for the man and woman who best approximates the fashion of the times!
